Pros & Cons of Living in Jupiter Florida
The pros & cons of living in Jupiter Florida is different for everyone. Living in Florida since 1979 I have seen some drastic changes to Florida in terms of growth. Having lived in Boca Raton in the 80's and 90's it was a quaint little close knit town. Boca was the place to live with upscale shoppes, restaurants and entertainment. Back at that time Jupiter was just a speck on the map and was nothing more than a little beach town. We saw an expansive building boom around 1984 when most of the Bluffs communities were built which included oceanfront condos, town homes and single family homes. Jupiter was destined to be the next Boca Raton. It didn't happen as the economy took a tailspin and it was nearly 15 years later before we saw the next building boom here in Jupiter.
Around 1997 MacArthur started selling vast amounts of land here in North Palm Beach County and the beginning stages of Abacoa was set. Abacoa was supposed to be the all inclusive community which was nicknamed Live, Work and Play. They were going to have a Downtown Abacoa featuring restaurants, theater, shoppes and a golf course and baseball stadium for spring training. This was the initial start to putting Jupiter on the map. We all know what happened between 2001 and 2007 when the housing just took off eventually leading to the housing crisis.
Jupiter Florida Today
The post housing crisis put towns like Jupiter on the map and eventually we saw more and more celebrities begin to call Jupiter home. Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan and several others were now moving to Jupiter. The trend continued and today we have a slew of celebrities calling Jupiter home. Like all of Florida the Covid epidemic caused an influx of out of state residents working from home to move to the Sunshine State for many reasons including lower taxes, quality of life and affordable housing. This was all true prior to Covid but since Covid the demand for housing went through the roof and prices skyrocketed by two or three times.
This caused many new homeowners to become full time residents and not be the snowbirds Florida had seen in the past. The demand pushed up home prices and now property taxes are similar to the Northeast and insurance costs have risen to an average of $7,500/year. Much higher than the Northeast. Combined the two costs plus the cost of homes have now equaled what it costs to live in NY or NJ.
